Herman Joseph Jr.
Herman Joseph Grottenthaler, Jr., 92, of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on Friday,
July 16, 2021, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford, Pennsylvania. His recent battle with cancer and
other serious medical issues, showed his courage in facing life challenges, and he stayed strong until
the end.
Herman is survived by his loving family, his wife, Ethel (nee Gielewski) Grottenthaler, who he married
on February 19, 1955; two sons, David (Sherrie) and Robert (Cheri) Grottenthaler; two daughters,
Linda Sicher and Lisa Grottenthaler; 8 grandchildren, Evan Grottenthaler, Christina (Matt) Egan, Amy
(Jesse) Strickler, Michelle (Chris) Bertini, Tara (Erick) Leggett, Joe, Justin, and Karlee Helbling; and 8
great grandchildren, Adalyn Cork, Simon, Andrew and Bradley Egan, Emily and Charlotte Strickler,
Logan Bertini, and Kendall Leggett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verna (nee Drusin) and
Herman Grottenthaler, Sr.
Herman served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years, was a supply Sergeant in the Korean War, and retired as Senior Master Sergeant. He then worked at the U.S. Post Office, where he ultimately retired. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, watching sports, reading the newspaper, gardening, negotiating great deals, and spending time with his family.
A service is being held for immediate family only.
Entombment will be in Allegheny County Memorial Park in Allison Park, PA
