Sterrett, Mary Margaret (King)
On Monday, July 2, 2018, Mary Margaret, age 98, of Penn Hills. Mary went to heaven to join her beloved husband Charles Calvin Sterrett. Her children were by her bedside, Susie (Jack) Solomon, Maggie Jayson, Chuck (Sue) Sterrett, Betsy (Steve) Tassaro, Bill (Joetta) Sterrett, and Nancy (Richard) Kacin. Loving grandmother to Michael Jayson, Andrew Jayson, David Jayson, Stephen Jayson, Sarah Beaudoin, John Sterrett, Scott Sterrett, Elizabeth Burbano, Margaret Tassaro-Tans, Stefanie Tassaro, Brooke Bednarski, Hilary Bateman, Alison Sterrett, Luke Sterrett, Mark Sterrett, David Leksell, Daniel Leksell, Julia Frankle, and 15 great-grandchildren. Loving sister to the late Dorothy Nichol. After graduation from Butler High School in 1937, she attended Grove City College and majored in chemistry. Starting in 1938, Mary was one of the founding members of the Grove City College Outing Club. Graduating with a BS in Chemistry, she began her professional career at HJ Heinz in Pittsburgh. In 1943 Mary joined the US Navy as an officer in the Naval Intelligence Department in Annapolis, Maryland. At the end of WW II she attended the University of Pittsburgh on the GI Bill and graduated with a Masters in Retail Merchandising. In 2017 Mary was honored as the oldest living graduate of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. While working at the Mellon Institute, she joined the Edgewood Supper Club. There she met a young Westinghouse engineer and later married Charles Calvin Sterrett in 1947. They settled in Penn Hills and raised 6 children. Many a school night was spent around the dining room table helping with chemistry, math, and English homework assignments. In 1970 the homework efforts turned into a substitute teaching career at Penn Hills High School. In retirement Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, great grandchildren, knitting, birding, lunching and traveling the USA and Canada in her Holiday Rambler motor home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11 am, at the Mt. Hope Community Church, 12106 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills, PA 15235. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Hope Community Church. Arrangements entrusted Hershberger-Stover Inc. Funeral Home, Crafton.
