Peacefully, at home on Monday, February 12, 2024, William “Bill,” age 84 of Pittsburgh.
Beloved husband for 63 years of Mildred “Mid” Davis.
Devoted father of Connie (Tim) Deichler, Brenda (late Gail) Withers, Amy (Laurie) Strefling of
Pittsburgh, and William (Andrea) Davis of Wilmington, Ohio. Proud grandfather to Bridgette
(Donald) Wolbert, late Joshua Deichler, Kyle (Tyne) Davis, Chad Davis, Davis Strefling, and
loving great-grandfather to Rucker and Garrett Wolbert, and Kam and Elle Davis.
Preceded in death by parents Gustave and Mary Davis, sister Marie Hill, and grandson Joshua
Deichler.
Bill was born on March 28, 1939 in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood and grew up in
Blairsville, where he met Mildred Ramsden, his high school sweetheart. They married on
February 27, 1960 before moving to Johnstown, PA, where Bill began his 33 year career with
Allegheny (now American) Airlines. Bill and Mid moved to Pittsburgh with their three daughters
in 1968 and welcomed their son in 1969. Bill retired from USAirways in 1992, but continued to
work as a driver for Enterprise.
Bill was an active member of the Crafton United Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday School
and serving as an elder. He enjoyed baseball games, chess, Monopoly, movies, telling jokes, the
opera, rare sunny days of Pittsburgh, horseracing, a good game of penny poker, attending Steeler
games (as a long-time season ticket holder), and spending time with his family. He was a gift to
all who knew and loved him and will be greatly missed.
Friends received at the Hershberger-Stover Inc. Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 170 Noble Avenue, Crafton, on
Friday 4-7PM only. Funeral service and a celebration life on Saturday at 10AM in the Crafton
United Presbyterian Church, 80 Bradford Avenue., Crafton (Pgh., PA 15205). If desired,
memorials may be made to the Crafton-Ingram Food Bank c/o the church.
